Vampire Academy may not have raked in the big bucks at the theater but the producers behind the book-to-film adaptation are gearing up to make the film’s sequel, Frostbite, a reality by using popular crowd-funding website, IndieGoGo to raise money for the film.
Last June, we brought you news of a status update on the official Vampire Academy Facebook page that alluded to a plan to help make the film’s sequel, Frostbite, a reality. While the status was very ambiguous, a few guessed the production team behind the first Vampire Academy film may be setting their sights on a crowd funding campaign. Now, producers of the first film have confirmed that they will be using IndieGoGo to try and make Frostbite a reality.

While the status was very ambiguous, a few guessed the production team behind the first Vampire Academy film may be setting their sights on a crowd funding campaign. Producers of the first film are setting up to launch the IndieGoGo campaign this Wednesday, August 6. Their hope is that they will be able to raise $1.5 million via fan donations for the sequel– if fans can reach the goal, producers say the financial backers behind the film will fund the rest of the production cost.
In an email sent to MTV News, Producer Mike Preger spoke about the decision to use crowd funding to try and make Frostbite a reality and also credited the fan support for trying to move forward with plans to create a Vampire Academy sequel.
“The fans mean everything to us,” Preger told MTV. “We decided to move forward with Frostbite because of the fans, and we want to give them the purest book to film adaptation possible. We have a script by Piers Ashworth that does just that. We want to give them exactly what they expect.”
Fellow Producer Deepak Nayar chimed in on the email as well saying, “Our financiers were willing to move forward ONLY if we could show them the fans would support us- it’s not an exaggeration to say that we would not be here without them.”
If fans of the Vampire Academy are able to reach the goal of $1.5 million dollars raised, Frostbite would tentatively go into pre-production in late 2014 and begin shooting in early 2015. If all goes well, fans could expect to have a sequel hit theaters in late 2015. And if you’re wondering if the potential sequel would reunite Vampire Academy stars Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Dominic Sherwood, Gabriel Byrne and more, producers are also cautioning fans that while they have every intention of trying to bring back the original cast, it would all depend on their respective availabilities.
Based on the popular YA book series by Richelle Mead, the film adaption of Vampire Academy was released in theaters in the U.S. on February 7, 2014.
Frostbite is the second novel in Mead’s best-selling series and continues the story of Rose Hathaway and her educational journey to becoming a Guardian.
